Plot:

Will Penny, an aging cowpoke, takes a job on a ranch which requires him to ride the line of the property looking for trespassers or, worse, squatters. He finds that his cabin in the high mountains has been appropriated by a woman whose guide to Oregon has deserted her and her son. Too ashamed to kick mother and child out just as the bitter winter of the mountains sets in, he agrees to share the cabin until the spring thaw. But it isn't just the snow that slowly thaws; the lonely man and woman soon forget their mutual hostility and start developing a deep love for one another.

A good film featuring one of Chuck's best performances, sadly often overlooked by general audiences. This is definitely not the "myth of the old west" as embodied by John Wayne, nor is it an incredibly cynical view of the old west, rather is is a very straight forward "just the facts ma'am" examination of life in the old west. The only real nitpick I have with it is that the villains seem a bit... cartoonish.

A forgotten classic, no doubt. This is never brought up when speaking of great westerns, and it baffles me. It's one of the best and most realistic westerns I've ever seen, with Charlton Heston acting his *** off! Heston called Will Penny "The nicest character I ever played", I think that may be true. Even me, who adore Heston, was extremely impressed with his work in this one, which differes from everything he had done before in his career. I definitely understand why it's his favorite.

I agree with EL CID 1983.
Donald Pleasence only made two westerns - and I really wished he hadn't bothered!
WILL PENNY and THE HALLELUJAH TRAIL would have been far better without his OTT style of villainy. This could have been a true classic in the same vein as SHANE but for the awful antics of Pleasence. Its probably Heston's greatest performance as well.

You really think he was that bad? His performance actually didn't bother me that much. Maybe because he's pretty over the top as Sam Loomis in the Halloween movies as well.

I have never really liked Donald Pleasence as an actor, and after reading what his daughter wrote about him after his death, I cannot stand him as a person either.

I'm afraid I'm not aware of what his daughter said about him. I'll have to Google it :sherlock:

Hmm. I never heard anything about this either. I've always liked Donald Pleasence.

She wrote an article in a British Sunday newspaper after his death that, if true, was quite disgusting. I won't repeat it because Mr. Pleasence cannot defend himself.
