Watching this right now to celebrate the Valentine holiday. Take my mind off all that snow I'm gonna have to shovel later.

The Gries-story is also in Chuck's autobiography. But the plain-looking heroine part is new and amusing.

I actually thought that Joan Hacket was far from plain-looking.

She was very nice looking - just not in a glammed up super-model movie star kind of way. Part of why she works so well in the part.

Yes, probably 'plain' means here natural beauty, sans too much glamour and artificiality. I even think that she went into the role with almost no make-up, or very simple make-up, almost negligible.

And it was probably for the best, considering she was supposed to look like she lived out in the frontier.

Didn't the NRA make a big statue of Chuck as Will Penny and deliver it to his home near the end of his tenure as their president?

I did not know that if true. Love the picture BTW, looks like Japanese anime art.

Yeah, he was presented with a life-size statue of Will Penny by the NRA. I read it somewhere at http://charltonhestonworld3.homestead.c ... tsPg1.html . But the exact link is not coming to my memory just now. Search across this website and you may find it.

Here's a closer look at the upper portion of Page 2 of the
Will Penny Pressbook (for the wider shots, see the
Memorabilia section, the Souvenirs thread).

The only real nitpick I have with it is that the villains seem a bit... cartoonish.

Donald Pleasence only made two westerns - and I really wished he hadn't bothered!
WILL PENNY and THE HALLELUJAH TRAIL would have been far better without his OTT style of villainy. This could have been a true classic in the same vein as SHANE but for the awful antics of Pleasence.

There was some discussion of Pleasence early in this thread, in regard to his role as the villain
in this film; as a kind of follow-up, here's an article on Pg.2 of the Will Penny Pressbook:
