When checking out the "Rank Heston's disaster movies" thread, I noticed that this is not exactly a fan favorite in this genre that Heston did quite a lot of work in. I have to say that while it's not my favorite of Chuck's disaster movies, it's definitely not my least favorite. I really enjoy it. I was at the edge of my seat throughout the whole movie. The suspense was great and had just the effect these kind of movies are supposed to have on the viewer, which far from all disaster movies succeed in creating.

I really liked the cast, we even got to see Superman Christopher Reeve in a supporting role. How 'bout that? David Carradine did a good job as well, in role that's pretty different than I'm used to seeing him in. He's usually such a great bad guy in movies but he played the tough as nails hero really well here.

This movie gets a thumbs up from me

It's been a while since I've seen this one - maybe a decade. I was reminded of it because I recently spotted a YouTube video of a bearded Heston doing a presentation and it must have been at the same point in time that he starred in this film.

Here's a preview of the film when it played on TV, presumably in 1986:

and here's a clip that includes Christopher Reeve, just before he became SUPERMAN:

You should check it out again to see what you think of it nowadays, Chrysagon. I think that it's very underrated as far as his disaster movies goes.

It took me a while but I finally watched this again. Unfortunately, I forgot that my DVD is a full screen 1.33:1 version with average quality picture - not the ideal way to watch a film. Maybe this is why I didn't have a high opinion of this movie. However, it's a more gritty, realistic version of the typical disaster film; this is not some spectacular, hard-to-believe adventure but something that can and does happen in the real world (subs getting damaged, sinking). The whole point is rescuing trapped service men and letting the audience in on the latest army/navy techniques for deep water retrieval.

I did get a bad vibe in one sense - my impression is that this 110-minute film was intended as a 130-minute picture; maybe someone butchered it in editing, I dunno. There seemed to be minutes missing here-and-there. They key scene of a ship striking the sub ends up being confusing. Heston, the departing captain, is up top with other officers when the ship hits; the next minute, he's inside the sub, just fine. :-? A couple of wives are introduced after the accident but never show up again; I assumed they were the captain's wife and the commander's wife (the commander, the new captain, is played by Ronny Cox; one of the wives is played by Rosemary Forsyth, Heston's girl in THE WAR LORD). But, I wasn't sure. Forsyth ends up in one very short scene; I'm pretty sure that her role was severely cut from what was intended. The story has this truncated feel at these points and results in a choppy narrative.

I don't remember getting the same vibe when I watched the movie. Now that you mention it though, maybe you're right. I'll keep that in mind the next time I watch it.

I am watching this movie now, and its pretty good! A lot of great supporting actors along with Heston! I am really digging it. BUT I am wondering if Gray Lady Down was based on a true story? There is hardly any trivia on IMDB. there has got to be some interesting Trivia about this movie. Anyone got any?
