Arthur Kopit's 1969 play, 'Indians', with Buffalo Bill Cody as its sardonic hero, is to some extent drawn on this film, especially on the characterisation of the protagonist. The temporal scheme of the play can be located after the Pony Express incident, and Buffalo Bill is now trusted by the Indians. They expect him to be honest to their cause. But Buffalo Bill's ambivalently dignified role as a civilian, an adventurer involved in military and colonial administration can be traced back to Heston's portrayal of the same character(though younger) in 'Pony Express'.

I haven't put it in the 'Reference' section, for the reference is not explicit in the play, it is only the same character in a similar setting but the story is different. But I feel that the playwright was conscious of the movie-character played by heston, while working on the play. It is not a reference, but a kind of influence, indeed.

I have just bought the recent dvd release of PONY EXPRESS even though it crops up fairly regularly on British tv. Its always nice to get the official release.
