I haven't seen this one and hav heard very little of it from fans. I gather it's not a fan favorite. What are your opinion on this movie, CHfan?

Heston's performance was solid and excellent! I like the music 'Ruby'. I only watched it once a year.

Heston mentioned it in his book, In the Arena':
Quote:
It's reassuring to note that the first film I did in this period also turned out to be one of the best: Ruby Gentry, with Jennifer Jones.... Ruby Gentry was released about then and became a minor hit. This was useful for me, of course, demonstrating that I could hold up my end of a love story. Lydia has since observed it was also the first of what she calls my "hero heels."

In Charlton Heston's Hollywood, Jean-Pierre Isbouts wrote:
Quote:
Ruby Gentry opened in December 1952 to respectable reviews. Heston's screen presence was described as "convincingly muscular." "A bold, adult drama of love and lust," annouced Variety.... As Vidor proundy recalled in his memoris, the film also spawned a it song, 'Ruby', which he claimed has been recorded "by at least twenty singers and orchestras.

Heston also mentioned in Charlton Heston's Hollywood:
Quote:
This was the first time (though Lord knows it was not the last) that I was killed in a film. It's now eleven deadths, and counting
:)

I have a DVD of this one and watched it about a week ago. I'm pretty sure I saw it once before many years ago on TV. It isn't really my type of picture as far as genres, a melodrama about class warfare. The central character is played by Jennifer Jones and everyone else, including Heston, is relegated to supporting role status. Heston was pretty strong in it - he's this particular locale's most eligible bachelor, toughest male and so on, so he fills those shoes well. He even displays a sense of honor & stubborn integrity (he can't be 'bought') in one scene, so it's an early example of the types of roles he would play for the rest of his career, the incorruptible hero (El Cid probably being the most obvious).

RUBY GENTRY is a terrific soap opera ..... if you liked DUEL IN THE SUN you will enjoy this modern variation on that theme of lust, betrayal and revenge. The music is very effective too, and Chuck plays one of his early hero/heels again. There is an early scene in the movie when Chuck and all his NRA pals are sat around the table in the lodge and Chuck touches Jennifer Jones' *** as she is dishing out the food, and she scrapes his face. The music playing in this scene is 'Swing low sweet chariot' which I thought was very appropriate in a Chuck Heston movie.
RUBY GENTRY is available to buy on dvd, Thorn, and I think you will enjoy it.
By the way, Martin Scorsese copied the ending of RUBY GENTRY for his De Niro CAPE FEAR remake.
