For those of you who saw Planet of the Apes when it was originally released (or at least before it had become the most known twist in cinema history), what were your reactions to the ending? Did you see it coming or were you shocked beyond belief? What was the reaction from the crowd or your family/friends that you watched it with?

I really wish I hadn't already been spoiled when I watched the film all those years ago. It was inevitable though, how could I not have been? It has been parodied and referenced everywhere; The Simpsons, Family Guy - it's even revealed on the damned DVD-cover!

Nevertheless, it was a powerful ending, truly one for the books!

It was a shocker and was the only ending they could have used. In the novel was was different the ending too was a shocker.

Yeah, I reckon no one would have been surprised if it ended just the way it did in the book. It was a very popular novel at the time.

Don't forget "Spaceballs"

"oh ****, there goes the planet"

Yeah, I hate the fact that the ending twist is on the DVD cover. To be honest, I don't remember if I knew about the ending before I saw the movie or not. I do however remember seeing the movie on TV as a kid.

Here's a supposed original ending to PLANET OF THE APES wink-wink. It's kind of stupid but it also shows what a great actor Heston was compared to the bozo here, so I present it here just for that :

I have to say I laughed a bit when he found some of those objects. Not so much for his Chuck impersonation, though.

Yeah, it wasn't too bad as humor goes -- maybe went on a bit too long.

Here's a sharper version of the POTA climax parody in Spaceballs:

I think that was the first reference to Planet of the Apes I ever saw  I watched that movie all the time as a kid. Still love it.

I didn't see PLANET or BENEATH in the theaters when they were released (although I did see THE OMEGA MAN, CONQUEST OF THE POTA, BATTLE FOR THE POTA, and SOYLENT GREEN when I was 9, 10, and 11, respectively --- GREAT memories! :) ).

I fell in love with the APES when they were first shown on US television in 1973, but by then I had already known the deal with the ending, and I had seen CONQUEST and BATTLE at the theaters.

These days it's hard for me to conceive of any newcomers seeing the movie for the first time and, even if they know nothing of the idea behind the POTA series, not realizing where the characters are. Maybe in 1968 we were more naive? It's a powerful ending anyway, though, whether you know it or not!
