Why oh why would they melt it down? I thought they kept all the figures, maybe not at the same place though.

For reasons of space, Thorn, and depending if you are "in" or not. As soon as somebody is out of fashion they get melted down and the space is used for the latest celebrity that is "in".
The London Madame Tussauds figure of Heston in KHARTOUM wasn't that brilliant, either, certainly not as good as the Heston Moses in the American Tussauds.

That's pretty sad. You'd think only timeless characters, actors and persons would be made into a statue.
