This is one of the productions from his later career that I wish to see the most. It seems like a solid TV-movie with great performances. It's been released in Sweden, but is OOP. I'm trying to get a hold of a UK copy that is still sealed, but that's pretty hard.

What are your thoughts on The Little Kidnappers, CHfan?

I like this movie that is an excellent family film. The music score is beautiful. The movie was filmed in Nova Scotia, Canada. The scenes are also beautiful especially the beach scenes. Two little actors stole the show. Heston's character is an old stubborn gradfather of the two boys. Heston did his job well, but not his best.

I watched this a few months ago on Amazon Video and kept neglecting to comment on it here. From what I recall reading, this little TV film has some harsh critics even among Heston fans because they don't like his character here. The reason for this may be that Heston's character is not the cliche 'grumpy-old-guy-who-is-really-a-nice-guy' type of character. He has a lot of deep-rooted rage and issues, mostly over the death of a son in a war, and this does not change by the end of the film - it's fairly realistic. He remains an unfriendly, hostile character - as it would be in real life. He's also fixated over a plot of land - some hill - and at one point he's even firing his rifle at one of his grandsons, who is on this hill (there are extenuating circumstances but this give you the tone of it all). He also doesn't hesitate to take his grandson 'behind the woodshed' for discipline when he thinks he needs to. So, he's not very likable here, to put it one way.

BELOW: the grandsons wonder what Heston is going to do with the ax...

I've also read comments elsewhere that Heston is the only known actor in this, the others being unknowns, but Bruce Greenwood has an early role here and he went on to a fairly long film career, playing Kennedy in Thirteen Days (2000) and Capt. Pike in the new Star Trek films (2009 & 2013). He's very good here, as are the rest of the cast. Overall, it's a very watchable little film, capturing a time & place which is somewhat alien to modern viewers.
