Ed Nelson, who played the ill-fated pilot who preceded Heston in attempting to enter the damaged airplane through the hole in the pilot's cabin, died on August 9th of congestive heart failure at age 85 - http://www.nytimes.com/2014/08/13/arts/ ... .html?_r=0

Though he is best known for his regular TV role on Peyton Place, he had many roles in films dating back to the fifties, starting with low budget sf exploitation fare such as Swamp Women (56), Invasion of the Saucer Men (57), Attack of the Crab Monsters (57), Teenage Caveman (58) and The Brain Eaters (58). I also remember him in a brutal fight scene with Steve McQueen in Soldier in the Rain (63). He also appeared in another Heston film, Midway (76). He guest-starred in numerous episodes of various TV series throughout the sixties and the seventies (far, far too numerous to mention most here), including in Rawhide, Gunsmoke, The Twilight Zone, The Outer Limits, Mission Impossible, Night Gallery, The Rockford Files, Logan's Run and The Bionic Woman. Several of his last roles were in episodes of Murder She Wrote. R.I.P.

I heard. It's most unfortunate.

May he rest in peace. Best wishes to his friends and family.
