Early in the film, Heston as the army captain/Benny the Snatch :-? gets himself cleaned up and shaved; he's narrating at this point and says he "looked like something out of the Ten Commandments." I don't really get the joke because he just shaved, so I guess he's talking about a young Moses. Or.. it's reverse humor - Moses is known for being bearded so it's funny in the sense that he just got rid of a beard while saying this. It's kind of forced humor - like someone talked Heston into saying this - but it still made me chuckle.

I have to amend the statement I made earlier - it's evident in that scene that Heston's character, besides getting cleaned & shaved, also gets himself disguised as some kind of priest - hence the Ten Commandments comment in his narration. It's still a kind of forced humor to me, though.

Heston makes a joke about THE TEN COMMANDMENTS in THE PIGEON THAT TOOK ROME, and Paul Hogan reckoned that God looks like Heston in ALMOST AN ANGEL.

Other Heston movies which reference Heston movies include-

The chariot race from BEN-HUR being shown in ANY GIVEN SUNDAY

Stills of Heston in THE BIG COUNTRY being displayed in PROUD MEN

Heston being called Moses on three occasions in BOWLING FOR COLUMBINE, plus clips from THE OMEGA MAN and TOWN AND COUNTRY

Can anybody name any more?
