Just watched this again last night and was reminded what an excellent action/dramatic flick it was for its time. Great ensemble cast. Fun to get a glimpse of a young Christopher Reeves well before he'd done much of anything. And the last time I'd watched it, I'd not yet seen "The War Lord," so I did not know who Rosemary Forsythe was and obviously did not get the rather sweet implication of her playing Capt. Paul Blanchard's wife, who is rather devastated by the news his sub is down...

So as to memorable quotes -- I got a kick out of Blanchard's finally feeling frustrated enough to observe, "I feel like a one-legged man at an ***-kicking contest." LOL! It reminded me of a phase my big brother went through where he used that one a lot; now I wonder if he picked it up from this movie.

Also, not sure if this is the right category to include this....but what the heck. Who knows the particularly sly humor of having the men on board the stranded sub watch a scene from the movie "Jaws"? And know, it is not merely the irony of a bunch of sailors stuck 1450 ft. down (when crush depth is estimated at 1200) watching THAT movie...

Going by memory, Chuck was offered the role of the sheriff in Jaws but turned it down;
it eventually went to Roy Scheider.

Excellent memory! Yes, Chuck Heston was indeed offered the role Roy Scheider ended up with... It would've been interesting to see him in that role... I like Scheider a lot, and he does a great job with Brody. It would've been an unusual role in some respects for Heston.

I've heard two things about that part. One was that he was offered the role but declined it, the other was that he wanted the part but Spielberg turned him down. Wonder which one is true? Heston would have made a great Brody, that's for sure.

Capt. Paul Blanchard: Fourteen hundred and fifty feet! They really built this baby!
Murphy: Thank God!
Capt. Paul Blanchard: God and national dynamics!

Capt. Gates: I hope they understood it.
Mickey: If I did - they did!
