Plot:

he summer of 1942 brought Naval stalemate to the Pacific as the American and Japanese fleets stood at even numbers each waiting for the other to begin a renewed offensive. "Midway" tells the story of this historic June battle where a Japanese carrier force, in an attempt to occupy Midway island and lure the American fleet to destruction, was meet valiently by US forces operating off of three aircraft carriers and numerous escort ships. It was the first battle in which naval air power was extensivly used, and at its conclusion the Japanese Carrier force had been completly destroyed which lead the way for the US 1943 and 44 offensives which would eventually bring the Pacific War to a close.

Good film but I have to admit the fate of Heston's character was a bit... random.

Since I have yet to see this one, could someone tell me just how big of a partTom Selleck has in this? I'm a big fan of his, so him being in the movie makes me want to see it even more.

I think Selleck is in only one scene; it's a speaking role, but only like a 1 or 2-minute role, which held true for a lot of the actors in this one. It was a huge cast, but many ended up with just a single scene.

As for Heston, I've long had this sneaking suspicion that Heston preferred roles
Spoiler:
in which he was killed off - see also Earthquake (his idea for the ending); isn't that a preference of many actors - the death scene? I dunno if it was his idea in Midway, but I've heard him comment on stuff like this, along the lines of that it's more interesting when a major character doesn't survive.

Indeed, Chrysagon. In his autobiography, he said

Spoiler:
that he was probably the actor whose characters has gotten killed more than any other actor's  His call/request on Earthquake was the correct one to make, IMO. But we can take that discussion in the proper thread.

Too bad Selleck didn't have a larger role.

[quote="EL-CID-1983"]Good film but I have to admit the fate of Heston's character was a bit... random.

My point exactly. When I saw it this weekend I thought that scene was very poorly done. No words, no special facial expression on Chuck's face going "Oh ****...!" or anything. It just happened. Worst scene in the movie IMO, it just didn't add anything.

Other than that, I enjoyed the movie quite a bit. It was a good war movie, a genre I'm usually not a huge fan of. It was very much like a disaster flick from the same period, a huge cast which meant a lot of sharing screen time with others. I have to say I didn't care a whole lot about Heston's characters son and the Japanese girl. I even said out loud "Why the hell would she want the son, now that she's met his dad?"

I was disappointed about Selleck's small role, I think he uttered one sentence and that was pretty much it. It didn't affect my viewing pleasure though.

Oh well, thumbs up from me! Probably lands at a 7/10 for me.
