They're both great movies and I can definitely see the PC view, but as I hold Dances With Wolves 4th on my all-time favorite list, I think it deserved every award it got and would have liked to see it win some more, Kevin Costner for Best Actor being one of them.

By the way, I really don't like it when the Academy award a statue to a director/actor etc just because they've lost several times before. It becomes a sympathy-award, some even call it a mini-Lifetime Achievement Award when it happens. Scorsese receiving one for The Departed is a perfect example. I knew he was going to win even before the ceremony, but when they had friends Steven Spielberg, Francis Ford Coppola and George Lucas presenting the award, it was painfully obvious what they were doing. No suspence at all. Ridiculous. Award the right movie from the get-go, don't give out an Oscar to a director/actor/whatever if their work isn't the best of the year, just because they've lost out before. That's what the Lifetime Achievment Award is for.

Right - and I hope you didn't misread my previous post; I have nothing against Dances With Wolves, but I just think Hollywood folks don't know what they're doing when it comes to awards or concepts of what is best in film, and they seem to suffer from some kind of split personality. They all regard Martin Scorsese as their best filmmaker and many even revere him, and this was also the case back in 1990 - it had been the case since about 1980. But, what happens - when they have the chance to award him for his best work - the best of the best GoodFellas - they pass on it :-? (and, as we discussed, instead opt to give him a consolation prize many years later). It's almost like they secretly hate Scorsese (and maybe many other directors do envy & despise him in secret, who knows?).

The whole thing was a real head-shaking experience for me back in 1991 (when the Oscars were actually awarded). I still remember having lunch back then with two friends and telling them my feelings on the whole matter - it's really something that I still remember that detail. To me, it's all sort of crazy and delusional with Hollywood; as the old saying goes, that's Hollywood...
