Chrysagon - Heston was eventually a Sergeant in LUCY GALLANT. Look at the newspaper headline at 53.40

OK, James.

Just FYI - my internet went down at home yesterday and I'm using a library computer to respond (which I think you use to respond here). But, my time on the net is extremely limited and, if repairs don't go as planned on Monday, my time here will be limited until further news. I can't even check out the video you mention today because my time on the Net is almost up. Thanks for your input here.

Good thread, thanks for bringing this out.

The rank of Antony's character in ANTONY and CLEOPATRA is a bit problematic. In JULIUS CAESAR, he is a General, but by the time he was in Egypt, he was almost a mini-emperor, referred to as the 'ruler of the half of the world'.

My internet service was repaired but the technician left me with some disquieting parting words - that she didn't know why it went down and if it goes down again, another tech will be required...

Good point about Antony, Judah. I forgot that he expanded his power in the follow-up film and story. I'll have to post another updated version of the rankings, along with James Byrne's latest points.

btw, I'm surprised that James didn't mention Heston's other detective roles:

Detective - TOUCH OF EVIL, SOYLENT GREEN, THE CRUCIFER OF BLOOD

Professor - THE ORDER and CAMINO DE SANTIAGO

Plantation owner - RUBY GENTRY,THE NAKED JUNGLE, DIAMOND HEAD, THE HAWAIIANS

Chief Executive Officer - THE COLBY'S

Archaeologist - THE AWAKENING

Conductor - COUNTERPOINT

Foreman - THE BIG COUNTRY

Mafia Godfather - ORIGINAL SIN

Pirate quartermaster - TREASURE ISLAND

Above are all what I consider Heston's civilian roles, though the rank of Detective might be placed on the Rankings list - I'm just not sure where... :sherlock:

I did a little research and got some details on Antony, as far as terminology. Yes, I was really off on his ranking for Antony and Cleopatra - he was far more than just a general by that point. I also will add in a couple of other rankings based on James Byrne's input. The revised Rankings are below. (3rd time is the charm?) :)

Some other points, Chrysagon :

1. We have forgotten Chuck's role in THE SAVAGE, where he is a tribal prince, since as a child, he was adopted by the leader of the tribe.

2. We need to think about the role of Buffalo Bill in PONY EXPRESS.

3. As far as I remember, Ron Catlan in NUMBER ONE was the captain of the football team, at one point. This captain-rank is non-military, of course.

1. We have forgotten Chuck's role in THE SAVAGE, where he is a tribal prince, since as a child, he was adopted by the leader of the tribe.

I'm not sure about this one - is there actually a title of "Prince" among American Indian tribes of the 19th century? I know Heston's character was the adopted son of an Indian Chief, but was he really some type of royalty in his tribe? Also, it's tough for me to place this character on the same level as, for example, Heston's Moses in The Ten Commandments, where he was a royal Egyptian ruler 2nd only to the Pharaoh and with powers of office & over multitudes of people limited only by the Pharaoh himself. In The Savage, Heston's character has no power in the white man's world and even his own tribe has problems with him due to his origins as a white man (the obvious difference between this and his role in The Ten Commandments is that no one knew that his Moses sprang from different people when he held his power as prince).

2. We need to think about the role of Buffalo Bill in PONY EXPRESS.

I did think about this one briefly when I first put the list together: as far as I can tell, Heston's Buffalo Bill was a scout for the army but with no actual rank. He also had a military record, enrolling as a private, but even there I don't know if he attained any kind of rank. At this time, I don't know where we might place Buffalo Bill on the list.

3. As far as I remember, Ron Catlan in NUMBER ONE was the captain of the football team, at one point. This captain-rank is non-military, of course.

Right - I can't see placing this role on the same level as Heston's other captains. Being captain of a football team is almost like an honorary rank - his authority, if any, is extremely limited, mostly in the area of morale and counsel. It's also very limited in scope - just to that of a football team. As a pilot - sure, his authority is limited to an airliner, but like a ship's captain, he is the ultimate office of authority up in the air, usually including over other possible authority figures who might be on the airplane. In other words, whatever he says goes up there in that airplane.

Heston played the Mongolian Kerait ruler Toghrul in his final movie GENGHIS KHAN.

On 27 Feb 1950 Heston was Sergeant Michael Knowle in THE WILLOW CABIN who was killed in WWII.

On 22 October 1951 Heston played the Scottish general MACBETH in a Studio One tv presentation.

On 12 Nov 1951 Heston played James Otis in A BOLT OF LIGHTNING, another Studio One show. Otis graduated from Harvard in 1743 and rose meteorically to the top of the Boston legal profession. In 1760, he received a prestigious appointment as Advocate General of the Admiralty Court.
