here's a list of the top actors by number of total tickets sold for their movies.

Our man Chuck is very high on the list (remember, this is out of all actors - only Gable, Wayne and Harrison Ford beat Heston;
Ford had his Star Wars movies and Indiana Jones movies; that's why he beats everyone).
I only copied the TOP 55 actors:

4th? That is very impressive! Also, I believe John Wayne is the actor who has been the lead actor in more movies than anyone else, something to consider when looking at the list. Chuck's average is one of the highest as well on that list.

Yes, I noticed that Chuck's average was pretty high in comparison to most.
Wayne was in a lot of films, true, and he was also one of those stars who continued to be a leading man in all his films up to his very last one, a difficult feat to accomplish even among the most popular stars. Gable was the same but he died relatively young, not quite 60. Wayne was still a leading man at age 70! Even other big stars like Chuck, Peck and Burt Lancaster began to take supporting roles when they reached that age. Ford just turned 70 a little while ago and has begun to take supporting roles in the past couple of years; he hasn't had any real hits in the past decade except that last Indiana Jones film in 2008, and his latest, Paranoia, is one of the biggest flops of all time. I guess his big time is over.

One thing I should mention - I noticed this yesterday, that Arnold Schwarzenegger is missing from the list; I'm pretty sure that his total tickets would add up to enough so that he would be in the TOP 50 somewhere, so I think someone missed him or he hasn't been counted yet. There may be other big stars missing, but I don't think the TOP 10 would change in any way; the biggest or greatest stars are fairly well known. I'm not sure about Silent Era film stars; there were really big ones like Chaplin, but there may not have been as many movie-going people way back then (the overall population was smaller, for one thing) or there just isn't any data from so long ago.

Yeah I didn't think about Arnold not being there, he should. I believe his movies has grossed more than Sly's overall. At least that was the case some years ago before Sly's comeback.

I'm adding this update to the thread because the Cogerson Hub Pages to which the first post here links to no longer exist; they were moved a few months ago. Here's the new site for Heston's adjusted box office figures, now called the Ultimate Movie Rankings: http://www.ultimatemovierankings.com/ch ... on-movies/

If you go there, you might note that the dollar figures are bit more than what was copied and posted by me a couple of years ago (see the first page of this thread). That's because the adjusted figures change/increase a bit each year. Here are the top 10 Heston films - adjusted gross wise - as they look now.

1 The Ten Commandments (1956) Yul Brynner $1051.50 #1 in 1957 85.0% 07 / 01 77.88
2 Ben-Hur (1959) Stephen Boyd $807.90 #1 in 1960 88.7% 12 / 11 94.15
3 The Greatest Show on Earth (1952) James Stewart $454.70 #1 in 1952 64.0% 05 / 02 72.40
4 Earthquake (1974) Ava Gardner $342.70 #2 in 1974 38.0% 04 / 01 57.32
5 True Lies (1994) Arnold S. $291.50 #3 in 1994 71.0% 01 / 00 67.53
6 El Cid (1961) Sophia Loren $289.90 #3 in 1962 82.0% 03 / 00 71.12
7 Airport 1975 (1974) Karen Black $242.00 #5 in 1974 43.0% 00 / 00 55.05
8 Planet of the Apes (1968) Roddy McDowall $204.60 #6 in 1968 84.5% 02 / 00 70.78
9 Midway (1976) Henry Fonda $181.10 #9 in 1976 60.5% 00 / 00 57.39
10 Cats & Dogs (2001) Alec Baldwin $134.00 #24 in 2001 53.0% 00 / 00 47.12
