Plot:

Chief of Scouts Ed Bannon narrowly avoids an Apache ambush while working with the cavalry stationed at Fort Clark, Texas. The US Army is trying to talk peace with the Apaches and move them to reservations in Florida, and they take Bannon's efforts as detrimental to their new policies, so they fire him. When the Apache chief's son Torinada returns from an Eastern education, Bannon becomes highly suspicious of his motives based run-ins with Torinada in the past. Bannon continues shadowing the proceedings to the chagrin of both the US Army and the Apache warrior.

This wasn't one of Heston's better films; if I remember his book correctly, even he didn't think very highly of this film.

I really like ARROWHEAD. If you read all the IMDb reviews they rip the movie to pieces, sighting "Heston's racism", etc. But Jack Palance is equally "racist". They are both the same really. The ending, the fight between Heston and Palance, is terrific.

Found it in youtube.

The last fight scene in Arrowhead:

In the Films of Charlton Heston, Jeff Rovin wrote:

.....Arrowhead is an excellent motion picture. Indeed, any film with Jack Palance as the vllain can't be all bad. He is classic in this respect. And , of course, Heston is the perfect Hero. Pit them against one another with the tight script, good directing, and a strong supporting case, including Brian Keith and Milburn Stone, and you've got a winner.

The film is based on fact, the story of Al Sieber, an Indian scout who, according to the film's opening credits, "deserves to have his name ranked with Daniel Boone, Kit Carson, and Willian F. Cody." The commentary goes on to detail how he deserves the Congressional Medal of Honor for performance above and beyond the call of duty.

I actually thought that last fight was a little weak.

I thought the final confrontation was strong. No stuntmen were involved and there was considerable ego rivalry between Heston and Palance in ARROWHEAD. Palance had just filmed SECOND CHANCE with Mitchum and actually slugged Mitchum full on in the fight scene in that wonderful movie. Palance was an ex professional boxer by the way.

I did not know that. I bet Heston could kick his butt though :P

I stumbled across this Heston board over the weekend. I've been a huge Heston fan since the early 70's and don't know how I never found this board before now. I wanted to choose a Hestonian moniker and took a stab at Ed Bannon from Arrowhead as so many others were taken.

I quite like Arrowhead. I don't think it's one of the "great westerns"; but it is above average, IMO. So what if Heston's character is "racist"? I think it makes for an interesting character and film (as did John Wayne's Ethan Edwards in The Searchers). Part of what makes it interesting is that Heston is mistrusted because of his Indian hatred; yet he turns out to be 100% correct as to the intentions Of Toriano while the PC types are taken advantage of. I also like it because Heston is so unapologetic about his surly cynicism in the role. Heston really excelled in playing cynical western characters, and Ed Bannon is one of his best. The scene where he pulls off Toriano's hat to reveal Toriano's long hair is electrifying, IMO.

I'm sure Arrowhead was planned as an average western. The presence of actors like Heston, Palance, Brian Keith and Milburn Stone, along with a better than average script and a main character that was somewhat unlikeable make it a memorable and interesting film for me.
