Thanks for that wonderful review, Ladyhawke! I enjoyed reading it a lot. Seems like a good movie I have yet to see of Chuck's. I'm so happy it finally has a release on DVD!

I ordered the DVD last week. If the mail works as planned, I should get it tomorrow.

As I mentioned earlier in this thread, this is one of the few Heston films I have yet to see.

So, tomorrow may be... historical.. for me.. 8-)

I should mention that Heston's "Antony and Cleopatra" is not like Taylor and Burton's "Cleopatra". (Which I also love.) Heston's film is not a large budget epic. Remember this film is essentially a play. The sets and battle scenes are on a much smaller scale. In the "Making of " feature, Heston's son, tells of how they used one ship to represent two ships, in the battle on the sea. With the exception of the scenes that were shot outside (battle scenes, distance shots, and so on), the sets do give you the feeling that you could be watching a play. I think this style of set design and cinematography, actually works well with Shakespeare's play, turned script.

I hope your DVD comes today, Chrysagon! Enjoy the movie! You might want to watch "The Making of..." feature before you watch the film. It will give you a nice insight to the film.

The more I watch this film, the more I like this film.
The music score is beautiful. Heston is really perfect as Antony.
Hildegard Neils also did a great job.
 :applause:

The DVD did arrive today. I'm halfway through the film (put it on pause). So this is the Heston film that ended up as the one I chose to see in tribute to Heston today...

I have seen Heston's Julius Caesar (1970) film and figured that this would be similar in style, so I sort of knew what to expect (though Ladyhawke's explanation is a good rundown for anyone here who may not be familiar with it).

I was fine with actress Hildegard Neil as Cleopatra until I got to the scene where she's informed that Antony (Heston) has a new wife (about 45 minutes in). It wasn't so much her acting as her appearance in this scene; something went sideways here (her hair style?), as she suddenly became this shrewish, unpleasant-looking woman in this scene, certainly not the legendary Cleopatra..

Otherwise, quite interesting; a nice DVD widescreen picture for this Heston attempt at Shakespeare on film.

I ran across this nice-looking poster for the film (it's similar to the CD cover on the previous page of this thread). Since this is one of the few film threads without a film poster at the start, I figured... may as well present it here:

The hread is deserted since August 2011... well, it will not be so any longer. I have got a new DVD, and going to watch this for the first time! I am much exited about it--- I'll come back and post my feeling very soon , once I have finished it.
